Most of us begin the complex process of learning to recognize facial expressions in infancy. From the faces of parents, siblings, teachers, and others, we develop a considerable amount of expertise in this aspect of socialization at an early age. Since this skill in recognizing emotions is so important in surviving, why not help your child develop it at an early age with this app?

Faceland Emotion Schools show how to separate parts of a face - eyebrows, eyes, mouth - and tie each to different expressions. Videos first explain the meaning behind each feeling. Why might someone be afraid or angry? Then videos and photographs showing examples of different faces help describe what parts of the face change, and how, for each expression. Interactive games let your child practice on photos of real faces before moving on. Practice with a mirror encourages children to copy each feeling as they learn. Hundreds of real faces showing ideal expressions are randomly chosen to keep play challenging and fun.

If your child has behavior problems, it may be that he or she are not reading the social cues correctly, a problem in many disorders such as autism and attention deficits. Reading skills development, which is equally complex, is systematically taught with letters, sounds, words, etc. Why not use the same systematic teaching skills to help your child strengthen social skills with the Faceland schools?

Surprise, Anger, Fear, Disgust, Sadness, and Happiness were selected because they are the most basic of human emotions. Expression of these emotions appears in a variety of culture throughout the world. Paul Ekman began this research with a pre-doctoral fellowship from National Institutes of Health in 1955. Faceland, designed by educators, clinicians, and game experts, utilizes research as a base to create structured facial clues to help children learn. Developed under an NIH grant, thousands of copies of Faceland have been used in schools around the world. Controlled studies have shown it improves children’s understanding of emotions when used in either single play or school group settings.
